My computer began to start windows installation program to install Office 2003, which I dont have. It happened at startup and when I right mouse clicked on a folder or file. Couldnt even unpack RAR or ZIP files with right mouse click. I downloaded this program, and within 2 minutes was able to disable the Installer in the "Services" tab. I appreciate this FREE program and how fast it works. 17235

This program is by far much more user friendly than the Windows on board 'msconfig'.
Starter is very easy to use and simply helps to prevent all the 'clutter' that wants to start when Windows boots up.
I recommend it without any queries at all. 14353

I'm *very* picky about my apps, and I think Starter is great. I've been using it for several years, and it gets better all the time. I've tried several other startup managers, and I have found Starter to be the easiest to use, the most reliable, the least system-demanding, and to provide the most useful information. The creators still develop it regularly, and their changes are always useful ones. The only two things I'd put on my "Starter Wish-List" are: (a) add built-in help (e.g., it took trial and error for me to figure out what their new "MSConfig Compatibility" option actually did, and I'm still a puzzled about why the feature even exists), and (b) add the ability to modify the timing of startup items (i.e., eliminating my need to also use "Startup Delayer"). Still, Starter gets a big "Thumbs Up" from me! 12890

This program is simply the best there is for managing startup processes and programs. Being a computer programmer myself, I consider Starter to be a must have for every CIS professional.
However, I do not recommend it for most computer users because it is quite easy to shoot yourself in the foot with this program if you don't know what you are doing.

Hey-It will not let you disable services (as on the msconfig/services tab) so what is the point? I can do the stuff this program does in regcleaner or hijack this.What it needs is the ability to see services in msconfig-that would be useful. 8363

Starter is a nice combination startup manager & list of running processes which includes the associated dll files, etc. in another window. The only thing missing is an easy option to add a program to startup (a very minor point since additions are rarely made). The author has updated the product twice in one month (quick fixes) & appears to be plannning some major improvements. Keep on eye on this product. 8359

What hasn't already been said? This is a great startup manager. I particularly like the ability to disable the startup of system (critical?) functions, like the shell for example. Dangerous, but good for drivers that "prefer a stick shift over an automatic." More power, more control, more happy. 7218

Oh come on--it's not THAT good. For example, there is no way to select multiple startup items, and disable or enable them all at once. (When I want to disable all of my several startup shortcuts, I find it bothersome to have to do each one manually.) Nor is there any way to enable or disable all entries at the same time, such as with a toolbar button. (Ironically, when I asked the author for such a feature, he said that it was too dangerous--yet, he provides a facility to kill running processes. Go figure.)
Another thing that prevents me from using Starter is the fact that it refuses to let you include quotation marks in startup items. Enter them, and it strips them. I find this annoying.
Starter is pretty good overall; I just wish these few points were remediated. 7207

I have used a number of programs like this such as StartUp Cop but this is by far the best version I have seen and used. It does far more than just allow you to see what is in your StartUp Process, you can view the processes running and vary the priority or terminate a process (yes Windows Task Manager does the same), it also allows you to export and import various start up configurations depending on what you may want to do when you turn your computer on. A well laid and thought out program, simple to use. 6729

Excellent startup commander!!! Very powerfull and very easy to use.With localization option too. It doesnt have a spyware feature, but i allready have a spyware guard. I just want a startup controller. Very light to system requirements too!!!

Starter is a very good program that you can use it to manage all you're startup program when you're Windows boots without any technical knowledge. It very easy to use and have a very nice interface. I really like it very much cause every time I install new program and on that particular program I doesn't want it to run when my windows boots, then I just use starter to disable it rather then I go to Start > Run > and type "msconfig" and manage all my start-up program. It's very convenient by using this program. 6434

It's a very nice and easy use program. By using this program, you can easily manage all you're start-up program that start automatically when you're Windows boots. Just a few click, you can disable the program that you don't want it to run when you're system boot rather that you go to configure yourself by doing Start-Run-msconfig. 6259

While this product is better than winpatrol because it provided more information on each process. It doesn't provide any protection when an unwanted process tries to register itself at startup time. Winpatrol will pop up a box and prevent unwanted items from getting into the startup areas. Once you have things under control, they never have a chance to get out of control again. Winpatrol displays browser helper objects also monitors against any new ones getting into your machine. It again pops up a box to warn you when a new one has been entered so you can stop it if you don't think it is essential. You can lock your host file and monitor it against changes. In this way you can prevent a lot of virus and worm problems, rather that detecting and removing them later. I recommend WinPatrol, because of it's monitoring capability. You can only use one program to disable startup items, all progs of this nature will conflict with each other. Pick one never change!!! 5704

To have control over windows startup programs I find Starter as a best solution for it. Latter I find Startup Delayer as a much more useful tool to start programs without mess between them and find Startup Delayer increases speed of startup by two to three fold. However still I am using Starter to first to start my virus scanner and then startup delayer-which controls all other programs- and I prefer both to work in that way. So I recommend Starter but along with Startup delayer so that you will find it more effective solution for most of startup problems. 5576

Shows ALL the auto-startup programs, and tells you where they are started. Lets you disable (and re-enable) dubious progs, so you can use trial-and-error if you're not sure, then you can permanently remove them. You can easily add your own if you want. Also shows you running tasks, with much more info than MS task manager, and lets you kill them if you're sure you know what you're doing!
