Softperfect is an excellent packet filter. It doesn't offer the protection that an application-level firewall can provide, but conversely it uses very little resources and CPU time. (On average, I found that it used only 4-5 MB of memory and about an equal or slightly higher amount of virtual memory.) It's extremely easy to use. When you set it up, you specify which types of presets you use and allow (email, p2p, IM, FTP, etc.), and these can be changed easily later on as well. I believe that more advanced rules can be set, but I never tried this. As stated though, there is no application-level firewall, so outbound packets aren't monitored if they use a standard port. But as an easy-to-configure packet filter, I recommend it. 16927

I have three computers at home and two at my lab. All use different combinations of firewalls and antivirus.
Pro: It does what it supposes to do. Although Protocal-base Rule base is easier to use, it lacks the fine-grained control of application-base rule.
Coexist well with Panda Antivirus.
Con: Cisco VPN Client 4.0.5 does not work with version 1.4. Also, Windows XP SP2 Security Center does not inform correctly that the firewall is running. 6831

Pros:
- It's free!
- Interface is clean, well laid out and easy to use.
- Pre-set rules are dummy proof.
- Comparable features to some firewall software that you actually have to pay for.
Cons:
- No application based rule option (Not that big of a deal, but still...) :-/
- Rules are sequntial. For instance, if you allow internet access from the pre-set rules but you want to block a specific internet I.P., the rules need to be applied in that order. Overall, I can seriously recommend this product. 5931
