This firewall is rather simple minded as compared to others. Its approach is sound: drop everything unless explicitly allowed by rules. It reminds me of the 'iptables' system of Linux. It has no per-application filtering or other bells and whistles, but you can specify in detail EXACTLY what you want to do with the incoming and outgoing packets. Unfortunately, to do this you have to know TCP/IP (protocols, port numbers, etc.). So this firewall is not for the average user. There is online help but IMO it is not comprehensive enough for users with little knowledge about network protocols. I use LooknStop Lite for protecting my game server (running UT and Quake under Win 2000). These games use a single UDP port each for communication, so it was fairly simple to allow traffic on these ports and deny everything else (which is the most secure setup one can imagine). 17673

Look N Stop Lite was my first firewall. I was
planning to install (another highly reviewed
firewall) when I read the results of testing
(firewall vs firewall vs...) and Look N Stop
2.x passed more often than both the Lite version
and the (other highly reviewed) one. Paid to
upgrade immediately. Not sorry. Reg. code may
take several days to arrive, no need to send
inquires... 5495

Have been using the Shareware version (with filter) for a almost a month now. I must say, it's excellent and trouble-free.
The interface is plain and basic, but it's the effectiveness and reliability of any software which counts, not the interface. Anyway, this piece of software did not clash with my Windows XP Home Edition nor any of my other installed software programs.
(Shortly before this one, I tried another lesser known Shareware firewall and it caused DNS error and 'This page cannot be displayed', stopping me from accessing all websites, even though I was able to get online. I tried to re-configure the filter element in the firewall but this didn't work. Eventually, I found a way out of it myself and was able to access websites again, but I uninstalled that particular firewall, pronto.
I would recommend Look'n'Stop though.

I tested look'n'stop lite with 4 different online port scanners/test's and found it was easy to use even if you are not a specialist, it is small and does not slow down your system (pentium II, 350MHz)and passed ALL port stealth test's. Even the upgrade to version 2.4 a must have is easy & free. 4613
