Fantastic security; I run it alongside Kaspersky 2009 and have never had a problem that one or other of these two has not dealt with. Occasionally I also run SpyBot but it never finds anything that has got through.

This is the only AV to use. I have installed this program on over 50 computers. These are the ones that get brought to me because their commercial product, or their other free antivirus couldn't keep out the virus'. After I installed Avast, there were NO more problems. And there has been no slow down, freezing, or any other problems on any of these PC's, ranging from a 2.4ghz dual-core with 3gb of ram to a 550mhz Pentium III with 256 mb of ram. Avast is the first thing I install when people bring me their problems. My college even used Avast when their classroom PCs on a limited network got infected and their previous AV couldn't get the job done. 22092

I read a review a few moments ago some people talk a lot and say nothing. I've been using this anti-virus for about ten years now and I have had no problems whatsoever, but the person who made the review was running Vista - duh it's slow anyway, so what do you expect. Avast is solid software and you can turn off the update audio warning, great work avast ! 21760

No this is not another cookie-cutter extol-the-virtues-of-the-program review. Not that a lot of the reviews on this page sound awfully similar, having the same grammatical style and syntax, one might question their authenticity.. but I digress. Have this installed on a 2GB Vista machine and it slows it down like molasses dripping down a picket fence. On another machine running XP it has similar results, slowing down performance of some online games. It does the job its supposed to, but you are certainly made aware of its presence, from the animated tray icon that spins 95% of the time as it constantly scans your hard disk and every action taken, to the highly annoying 'VIRUS DATABASE UPDATED!' announcement scaring the beejezus out of you as you quietly surf the net. This gets -1 because of the annoyances, and another -1 because it has difficulty quietly monitoring in the background like a good anti-virus program should. 21605

I changed from Norton to Avast and have never looked back. My choice had nothing to do with cost, but was problem related. I have had constant problems with Norton 360, and after that Norton 2009 premier. Crashes, no start up, no shut down, virus scans freezing and crashing windows, not to mention un installing problems, even with the uninstall tool! But Avast has changed everything, no problems at all. It runs away in the background doing it's job. I wish I had installed Avast years ago, instead of being manipulated by advertising etc. For anyone who are thinking of giving Avast a go, don't delay, you will not regret it. 21353

Perfect to install and easy too use.
Had McAfee virusscan before, when I got Avast.
I updated McAfee, unplugged the internet cable and did take a full scan. But it did'nt find anything.
After that, I removed McAfee and installed Avast, updated the program, unplug the cable and did a full scan.
Avast did find 18 different trojans/viruses.
So yes, I will recommend Avast. 20571

I really like AVAST! I've been using it for a year. I had no worries until just recently. It seems that sometime in mid-December they released an update. I had a problem with my browser stalling and creeping to a halt, as well as some strange conflicts with Call of Duty's World at War. As it turned out through trial and error I determined that if I disable the Avast WebShield the problems went away. Hopefully they will correct this in the near future! 20480

Avast requires virtually no maintenance at all. Just download, install, configure a bit, and then you can forget about it. Unlike the OTHER free AV, this one updates itself automatically all the time, without needing any special scheduling set-up. It uses few resources and the on-access scan traps viruses and trojans effectively. On-demand scanning is quite slow and tiresome because if it does find anything, the scan stops and waits for you to decide what to do. But I don't scan on demand much anyhow. I like the multi-lingual interface on Avast as well. 20293

I love Avast. I have it installed on my home computers and so far no Viruses. The program has blocked viruses many times while I was browsing the Web and deleted them before they caused a problem. It is light weight and does not consume lots of system resources. You don't even know it's there. I simply does the job without getting in your way. Great Product! I will upgrade to the pro edition soon. 19709

Yes, Avast is excellent, used it for some time prior until I switched to another that does the same without system resource hogging. However, Avast does have a great detection rate. The scan is too slow for my taste though, reminds me of Norton and no, a scan doesn't have to be too slow to be thorough. These are the only reasons I don't use it, else it would be my choice and would still highly recommend this to others. It is a great Antivirus software. 19559

Avast Home edition is one of the best free antivirus, its easy, powerful, and free.
It can detect from the little viruses to the meanest. and the best of all it does not consume lots of RAM (Unlike other Commercial Antiviruses eg : Mcafee, of course I'm not saying that Mcafee is not good, but it needs lots of RAM)
the only bad thing about Avast is while scanning for viruses, u need to still close to it, because if it finds a virus, you will have to delete it first, because the scan will not continue until u delete the infected file(s).
It's annoying... 17984

Avast is the BEST, I really LOVE this product. It updates automatically, HANDS FREE, and a pleasant voice tells me it has been updated. It scans memory, and also will scan on reboot if you want it to. It is nice because on reboot at the command, you can select "Delete all, or Clean all" a great feature when a newbie brings you his computer with 6000 viruses. Set it and forget it... Avast really has a bright future, what a great product. 17870

I'm not as impressed with Avast as others obviously are.
The first major problem for me was that it blocked my OperaMail from receiving e-mail. I only noticed a few days after I installed Avast, that I hadn't recieved any e-mail for days. There was also no notification from Avast that it had blocked anything.
After much head scratching I decided to unistall Avast, no sooner had I done that then my e-mail came flooding in!
I've used Opera's ultra reliable integrated e-mail for over 5 years, and no other program has ever blocked my e-mail before.
I can't use it and can't really recommend it to others that use OperaMail.
I also hate the interface, it's so tacky and looks like it's been designed by a teenager trying to look cool and hip, but the result ends up looking more like a car stereo than a professional antivirus application.
AVG is my choice any day over Avast.

Which is the best Antivirus software? For most users something that does a good job, is easy to set up and doesnt need any fiddling with to keep it doing its job properly is the thing to have. The fact that it is free is the icing on the cake.
My family and friends often ask me to look at their PCs that have become infected, often whilst running the AV that shipped with it, even when kept up to date! Im sure we all know what those AVs are!
So after uninstalling the overpriced junk suite bloatware, then running Stinger and Sysclean, Ill install AVG or Avast! Sometimes one cant quite clear everything, but the other one always gets it.
Which is best? At the moment I prefer Avast! as it does a good screensaver scan, but if you dont use a screensaver you might prefer to use AVGs scheduler. Apart from that theres not much in it.
Then I follow with one of the very good Freeware Personal Firewalls and a couple of Anti-Spyware programmes and Bingo. Faster, better and FREE! 17554

Avast! provides just the right amount of protection without consuming lots of system resources. It's ideal for me, but I don't necessarily think it's ideal for the average user, as the average user normally isn't aware of the risk they pose to themselves. It's an excellent product if you understand it's limitations, and in turn your own responsibility for safe computing. It's lightweight, dependable, and of course, free. If you generally practice safe computing, and have other products employed for different types of threats (i.e. firewall, anti-spyware, etc.), then avast! is an excellent choice for traditional virus protection. I would give it 5 stars if not for the fact that it's a bit cumbersome to configure avast! to ignore certain files appropriately and consistently. I've tried other antivirus products, paid and free, but I've stuck with avast! for the past three years or more. In general, I highly recommend avast! 16996

I switched to Avast and I have been recommended it to family and friends that are looking for an easy, dependable antivirus.
Updates are reliable and regular. The really impressive part is the available components.
Standard shield(monitor)Web shield,Network shield and E-mail scanner are the components I use in addition to the scanner.
The configuration options are very good. I was surprised to see that the Internet Mail and Outlook mail scanners have heuristics.
The updates are automatic, but that's another feature that each individual can configure also.
Avast Home is packed with components and features, especially for a free program. 16831

I have recommended Avast to many people who had unsuccessfully tried to clean their 'virus protected' computers after infection for weeks. Avast ALWAYS did the trick immediately. We have bought the product for use at work and I use it privately at home. It is not easy to get me excited, but I am! The only downside is that the product is not well known. We do not rate marketing here, but this is about the only area where Avast could improve! 16675

Good side:
-Good detection rates
-Free antivirus solution for home users
-doesn't hog your system(like Norton)
-Automatically updates to newest definitions
-easy to use
-I had a virus that even Norton couldn't find and avast removed it successfully.
Downside:
Maybe that it doesn't have a web scanner but that isn't necessary if you use Mozilla. One of the best solutions in the market and free. 16668

This software is a gem, and its free. How do they offer this for free? It has a level of quality that makes me want to pay for it. And let me tell ya, I put this antivirus to the test and it passed with flying colors.
A couple days ago a friend brought me a very screwed up Emachine (I'm a computer / network technician professionally, so everyone i know has showed up at my door with computer problems at one point or another). At any rate, as i started looking at the system (win xp home) it was immediately obvious that the computer was infected with not only spyware, but i suspected that it had multiple virus`s as well.
I had run across avast a few weeks ago but assumed that it was another one of these free anti-viruses that only detects problems, but wouldn't fix them unless you bought the product. After reading on their website that it does indeed remove what it detects, i still didn't have high hopes frankly but i decided to try it anyway. 16563

In short an excellent free all round anti virus program, the best of the freebies and better than some that are not! 16036

Been using Avast now for about 3 years and found it faultless in operation and detection of viruses and trojans. The boot time scan is a feature that most other virus checking programs don't have. As a technician I have scanned hundreds of client computers for viruses etc. Regardless of what virus checker they have installed I always install Avast, update definitions then perform a full boot time scan with archive checking enabled. I cant count the number of times Avast has picked up viruses that other checkers didnt know about, particularly AVG and Norton. Email integration is excellent as is the real time scan and web scanning. System operation doesnt seem to be affected to much either. Updates are seamless and automatic. You cant miss the warning when you get a virus, especially if you have the sound on.
If you are a home user and paying for virus checking think again. Download Avast, install, update then remove your old program. Post results as a review. 15671

If you want/need protection for any of your systems, this is one full-featured product that you can not ignore. With Web scan, heuristics, email scan, P2P, and Instant Messaging scanning engines-this is nearly a "security suite". (If you use ZoneAlarm Firewall, you will need to disable one of the scanning engines due to software conflicts - still just as safe). Uses less resources than McAfee or Norton with a higher level of protection. Updates are daily and automatic. 15647

This is a great program. It won't slow down your computer. It has a very effective resident virus shield(s). One can choose scanning depth from "quick" (only recently accessed or opened files) to "thorough" (every file on the computer) and several levels between the two. The interface is different but very easy to use AND one can "reskin" it using one of the many new "skins" available at the avast! website. Overall, a great program that's actually better than many (not all) of the antivirus programs you have to pay for. 15605

I found out about this virus because of an online scan so I was looking for another antivirus. I downloaded avast, because it had a high rating from webattack, now snapfiles.
My virus problem was solved right after my first scan, this is definitely the best antivirus. It even scans your computer as you use it, it monitors my internet usage, my incoming mail, and much more. 15520

I've tried most free anti virus so I've plenty to compare it to. I changed to avast! 4 as soon as it was released, AVG 6 was getting a bit long in the tooth and I was having update problems. I'd seen avast 32 and been unimpressed, but the new version was a revelation. The default settings are pretty well foolproof, but despite the loss of the Pro interface, if you take your time to learn your way around it, there's a lot of fine tuning you can do to get it to run the way you want. The incremental update system is top notch, quick and unobtrusive. The ScreenSaver scan is a good substitute for scheduling. There is e-mail support from alwil if you run into any problems. A good user forum, which incidentally can show you how to get avast! to run scheduled scans using Windows task scheduler. You can password protect it to stop the kids mucking it up. It's ICSA rated with good 100% at VirusBulletin so it works. I've yet to find a downside. 15314

Take my word for it... you will not be disappointed! I've been using this program for years and still I think the rave reviews don't do it justice!
What everybody says about the program is true and whats even better is with imagination this AV program will do exactly (no more, no less), what you need/want it to do.
I set the screensaver on our home networked pcs' to Avast! It scans with no human intervention!, and even if interrupted would start again right where it left off! Now how's that for piece of mind!
Installing Avast! will give you a boot time scan for viruses that already exist... detecting the malware and quarantining/deleting before it has a chance to load with other apps.
The ability to scan ANY file or folder simply by right clicking and selecting option highlighted with the avast! "A" symbol.
THANKYOU AVAST! 15173

There are an insufficient number of superlatives, as well as space to sing the praises of this excellent AV program. I have had v4.7 installed on my PC for about a week now and still feel exhilerated on each and every occasion I start it up!! :-) Make no mistake Avast! is truly unique, innovative and creative in AV program design, which in my estimation is a clear 'head and shoulders' above its rivals! In some respects, it might well be considered a cross between an AV Program and media player inasmuch as the skins that can be selected to transform its appearance. These in my opinion are true works of art. They are really well-designed and beautiful in appearance. As for the 'business end'? That is just as keen, sharp and beautifully crafted as well. I must leave room to express my gratitude to ALWIL software for providing a richly featured freeware version of the program to home users. I would sincerely hope to upgrade to the Professional version, one day. 14776

By far, AVAST is the best anti-virus package, and one that most users have never heard about. It's detection rate is better than any popular commercial product I've tested. Unlike other AV software, AVAST does not gobble up system resources or clutter your operating system with unwanted annoyances. The interface is clean and easy to use. Also, it's one of few AV products that can scan before windows loads, which is vital to preventing infection. You can use the free version as long as you want without any hassles but it's worth every penny if you buy it. 14254

Installed to replace the troublesome AntiVir PE. It took a little time to optimize, I did not like the skinned interface, so if you prefer a more conventional one, do a custom installation and de-select skins. It does everything it is supposed to do, and overhead is minimal. I have some concerns on precisely how well it does in the antivirus tests, but it does pass the various certifications. I use F-Prot free DOS on my 98 machine and Bit Defender 8 Free on my XP laptop as a double check every month. So far, they have given no indications that avast! missed anything. 13856

I would not put avast! up with the best-of-breed AVs in terms of detection capability, but it is nonetheless very good, and certainly good enough for anyone who isn't completely careless.
Updates are totally painless--including program updates. It just works. No need to uninstall/reboot/install/reboot/clean up. I wish competitors would look long and hard at the avast! installer/updater.
The avast! screen saver is a very nice touch. For me at least, it obviates the need for scheduled scans.
One potential gripe is that signature updates aren't very frequent. Rather than the incessant updates of Kaspersky--or even the semi-regular updates of NOD32--you will only see an update every couple or few days.
Highly recommended, especially if you're as sick of forever paying for upgrades as I am. 12967

I just bought a new computer a couple weeks ago and it had come with Avast Home edition already on it. I hooked up my other computer to home network and was transferring files from my old computer which I was using Norton and have been using Norton for years. It had the latest updates of dats. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. Alarms and whistles went off from avast informing me of worms and another time trojans. I must have had at least 6 or 7 infected files with worms when I was transferring files from old to my new. Norton had overlooked everything. I couldn't believe it. I immediately went and downloaded and installed avast on my old computer and threw away Norton and I scanned my old computer with avast and it had found over 15 viruses that Norton didn't even know was there. I am sold on avast and will be updating to Pro soon just to help support the programmers that built this excellent antivirus software. Good job Avast! 11796

This program is free and updates the program and definitions in the background automatically, keeping your computer safe at all time. Would recommend and have recommended this program to many. Thank you Avast for making the best Anti-Virus software I have ever used. 11774

When my Norton subscription ran out I decided to try a free anti-virus instead. After the pain of having to scour the Symantec web site for a tool that would force an unistall of it's flagship product because Add/Remove programs wouldn't get rid of it, I downloaded the free version of Avast. As soon as I first ran Avast it found a Trojan previously undetected by [..]. No going back now, not ever. Not even for the free version of Norton Google will be giving away. 11770

You really can't go wrong with this program. For free antivirus protection look no further! Have been using this program for years. Has stopped every virus/Trojan thrown at my computer. You can configure the program to download the latest antivirus definitions automatically as soon as you connect to the internet. These come sometimes 2-3 times a day.Very reassuring! Many thanks to the company for making a freeware version for home use. No noticable slow down to my computer. The email scanning feature most welcome! Don't hesitate install now!

Very happy with this freebie product. One person stated that it uses alot of system resources. I control the usage because in the menu, you can check folders, files or programs not to scan. Why scan old MP3 or video files that I have had for years. I used the AVG in the past. In my opinion, Avast was much better in a proactive approach. Especially while surfing the web. 11370

I decided to test this program out after exclusively using AVGFree for the last year or so. It is very robust and thorough - however, my only complaint is that the free version doesn't allow you to schedule virus scans. Not a big deal if you can remember to manually run scans a few times a week. The default interface is quite ugly - but this is easily remedied by using a different skin (my personal favorite is the MacLover skin). Due to the lack of automatic scheduling, I haven't decided if I'll keep this as my default anti-virus scanner over AVG (which also has an ugly UI but at least has a scheduler). Even so, I'd highly recommend this program to anyone who doesn't mind the absence of a scheduling feature and wants a reliable (and best of all, free!) anti-virus program. 11285

This program is among the best freeware programs I have used. It has found and cleaned several viruses and worms from my system. The publishers were prompt on issuing me a user number for just a small bit of information. The frequent automatic updates take very little time to download. Unlike some of the major "buy it now" programs, this one does not try to take over your computer. It is easy to disable while making installs and is just a comfort to have around. I would rate it a 5/5. 11149

I have been testing several free solutions (same more than once) and every time I ended wit Avast. If you get rid of the awful skins you get a nice simple interface. Installation and configuration are quite easy and they update very regular. One minor thing: scanning a whole disk needs quite a lot of time compared to others.
I think you never should rely on one anti virus product and therefore I combine it with free scans now and then. It does the job very well and in my opinion its the best free choice at this moment.

WOW!!! I can't believe it's free.
avast! Home is the best free antivirus and even better than some commercial antivirus. avast! Home Edition is no doubt the best free antivirus solution for home users out there.
Pros: It has advanced multi-layer real-time protection as the following
1. Real-time HTTP scanner, basic web filtering for fighting against web-based threats
2. Scan network traffic in real time (similar to IDS) for blocking network worms
3. Real-time P2P, Instant Messaging scanner
4. Real-time e-mail (POP/SMTP/IMAP/NNTP) scanner
5. Standard real-time file scanner
and these advanced features...
6. Complete auto incremental updates that's fast, small and very effective
7. Boot-time scanner
8. Antivirus screen saver
9. Superb support forum
....
Cons: Some skin interface is rather cumbersome but its skinless interface is plain and simple to use.
All I can say, you will not be regret with this product. avast! Home Edition 9675

My review title is not an exaggeration. I have been around the block, and seen other freeware/commercial anti-virus programs. Avast tops them all, in terms of features (I have all I want), interface simplicity (no clutter), and straightforwardness (no roundabout ways to do anything). One thing that particularly appeals to me is the short and sweet differential updates to both the virus database and the main program. I got bored with downloading huge updates for other programs. 8590

It seems to be quite reliable with its regular automatic online updates of virus definitions (sometimes twice a day). I switched to Avast from Norton which took more of my computer resources than this program. Avast has very unusual but convenient interface. I have checked this app with several testing tools and it has passed all the exams. I have already been using Avast during several months and the only negative remark I can make is that scanning of my HDD (20 GB on one partition) takes quite time.

While Avast seems to be the best of the free. I have installed and run Avast, AVG, and AntiVir on W98. For W98 64K memory AntiVir is the only one that is small enough.
On XP Avast found Netsky virus in my email, AVG 6 & 7 did not. AVG has trouble with it's downloads, they have become a real pain under the new version. Avast updates are done in the background and you get an icon tray message saying it is done. Very smooth.
If you are truly scared and want the best protection. You can pay for Nod32. It has the best long term record on the "Virus Bulletin" site. 8292

This thing will not uninstall everything. I had processes or files running in the background left over that just cannot be removed by conventional methods. I had to use registry edit and removal programs to get rid of it all. and I am still not convinced that it is completely gone. This is the only anti-virus program that has ever given me this problem.
Otherwise, this is a great virus cleaner. It doesn't take up too much memory, and you can shut it off at will. However, its processes/files will remain running in the background.
I cannot recommend any great program that is very hard to completely get rid of, especially when after installation, some of its files still run in the background tying up unnecessary resources. 8128

Yes, it really is the best. I have read tons of user reviews in order to figure out which AV program is the best, and by far this is the one. It really finds all viruses and since I use it I do not have problems at all. Use it along with Spybot, AdAware and SpywareBlaster, as well as free edition of ZoneAlarm and you will be completely protected.
I also highly appreciate their concept of two editions. Home edition is fully functional and FREE. Every application for home users should be free.
They did the job well, they were not greedy for money and gave us home users free edition, so only the best words from me. I can highly highly recommend it. A must have! 8121

I've never had any problem with a virus since then - all my mails are cleaned in a smooth and reliable way. And Avast! gets better with every new release - and they come quite often! Newest feature is a web shield... I wonder what they bring next!? Thank you very much to the folks at Alwil Software for giving this excellent program for absolutely free! And thank you snapfile-community for giving the platform! 8004

I admit I was skeptical about using a "Free: antivirus program...but when it came time to renew Norton again, I just couldn't stand the thought of continually giving them money for subscription services....I tried a couple of the free AV programs and found Avast to be the coolest as well as the most effective (I purposely launched a virus on my old test box and Avast kicked its butt). I like the audible notification that the defs have been updated... so cool! "Virus definition database has been updated" ... He's my new best friend! get this one today! 7934

This is a fantastic product. It's so polished it's hard to believe it's free. I've used a number of AV packages including Norton and this is by far the best. The only thing it's missing is a scheduler. Regarding an earlier comment, the registration does run out after about a year, but all you need to do is re-register and you're up and running again. 7916

First, let me correct a few misconceptions: 1. avast runs fine in WinXP (those having trouble are probably running it alongside another AV and/or have failed to properly uninstall a pre/devious AV like NAV). 2. it IS freeware (after the trial period, contact alwil and they'll send you a free serial#) 3. system slow-down is minimal, even on a Win98/P2-350 machine (for Pete's sake people, when an installer asks for a reboot, DO IT!!). That said, avast is one fine AV; the skinned interface is fine just the way it is ("complicated" just means it's more configurable than the rest); the main menu can be accessed via right-click. Worthwhile features include incremental updates, heuristics, and an e-mail scanner that'll work with most clients. As long as you treat it as a LAST line of defense (the first line being good ol' common sense), avast will serve you right. AV progs should NEVER be thought of as FIRST lines of defense against viruses. 7317

After major problems with not being able to get rid of Trusted Zones in IE I decided to reformat my PC, install a non IE based browser, anti spy software and also look for an alternative anti virus program (after Norton). I tried AntiVir Personal which didn't satisfy and then Avast! No problems here. Very straight forward. Easy to install, doesn't slow the PC. Eats up a lot of Mb though. But if you can afford that, this is a program to consider. 6918

Love this freebie - used AVG and hubby still does and regularly is infected - with AVAST I am never infected cuz it just catches it first then you can put it in the chest and forget about it - frankly the email scanning is the best thing about it - catches it all before you get it into your system and keeps your contacts safe - wish my contacts would use Avast to scan email coming to me - my only prob with it is the interface - would like to be able to find that elusive "drop down menu" and would also like to be able to schedule timely scans like when I am off the puter ! sick to death of being nickel and dimed to death by the biggies eg: Norton and MacAfee so glad to have a free program - thanks Avast ppl !! 6622

First - I want to thanks the folks at Symantec for years of protection using Norton Antivirus. But now that I have tried Avast, I'll probably never go back. The interface took a little getting used to, but once I found my way around it was easy to see which was the better antivirus. Avast is far faster scanning email or files, loads faster, updates faster, and so on. The only slow feature is if you ask it to build a file database (optional). I've had no problems with it on older or newer PC's. (Even installed a new skin for it - so far no problems!) Norton was actually stopping some of my programs from running, and was way too slow at most things that we rely on, like downloading mail or even launching programs. So, thanks for the memories (and protection), but I'll stick with Avast from here on in. 6485

I've used Avast for well over 9 months. I previously used NAV & McAfee - they were ok, but as others indicate, they are "bloated" and system hogs. Avast does take a while to scan, and you must do this manually; however, it does a thorough job. I've never had a virus get through. In May, 2004, for about 2 weeks I was getting unknown emails from unknown addresses with different virus' attached - at least 10 a day! Avast caught and repaired everyone! Avast updates automatically whenever an update is available without delay. AVG is not bad and is easier on system resources, but I like Avast. Great protection, easy to use, dependable, and free!! Try it, nothing to lose. 6411

I really hate paying for Anti-virus software and don't believe in paying for it (now you know I'm not working for any of those companies and providing and unbalanced opinion). I have used Trend Micro, F Prot, and my father uses McAfeee. So far, AVAST! is the best of them. I just dumped Trend Micro. I had that for free for 6 months because it was bundled with an Asus mainboard. It was much slower than AVAST! because it loaded my system down. Actually, I hated their firewall because, even if it was disabled, the TM firewall wouldn't all me to run Zone Alarm, which is my favorite and FREE choice for a firewall (I like its ability to tell me what programs are trying to access the internet, and TM's doesn't do that). AVAST! runs just fine with ZoneAlarm, which I am thrilled with too. I haven't had any viruses yet, and I'm not worried. AVAST! did find and block something coming through from a porn link I accidentally *ahem* clicked on. 6377

Norton and McAfee are bloated resource hogs that take over your registry - just try to uninstall them and you'll see what I mean. Why bother spending the money to slow your system down with those headaches when Avast! is on the scene. Free, idiotproof, auto updates, bootscans, the whole 9 yards, AND the unistaller actually works! GUI is a little tough to get used to but once you locate the hidden menu drop down, you're off to the races. 5621

I was having two-mind whether to install Avast in my pc or not. After installed, Avast find many virus files all from system directories which are all not detected by the previous virus scanner I have used. Avast even detects virus when Spybot or Ad-Aware running. But why avast left it to detect only these two programs running. Anyway avast detects and even this was failed with other virus scanner. Two issues with Avast are 1.it eats memory and slows down system, a little 2. no option for automatic-timely update. Over all for good protection of PC, Avast is HIGHLY recommended than whatever virus scanners available. 5613

Having used AVG for several years I had not intended changing from it until the update system started to fail and they were not interested in resolving it. I changed to Avast and only regret wasting those years with AVG. Updates/VDB's are produced very frequently are seamlessly downloaded when the system detects them. There's also a useful news/alert box to keep the user informed of potential dangers. Has a virus recovery database so you can restore files if you get a virus. Also useful is the free cleaning tool (aswlclnr) which can be downloaded from the web site. 5122

Works really well. Full featured. Not software finicky like Norton AV. Easy to uninstall (unlike Norton) Easily updateable, including automatically. This is the absolute FINEST free and fully featured antivirus software I have ever seen. NEVER expires. Rock steady. I am seriously thinking about upgrading to the paid version.
My only complaint is that once you set it up (on INITIAL install) to scan on every boot you can not disable this feature later fr. within program. My advice - during install DO NOT check off this feature or all future boot-ups will take forever or you will have to monitor each one to manually cancel this feature each time you boot.. You must then UNINSTALL and then reinstall. 4851

I've been using commercial antivirus programs for over a decade -- in that time, Norton (Symantec) has gotten more bloated and unreliable, conflicting with too many other programs, downloads + updates take an eternity, and typically have to be done manually -- all unnecessary for a well-written anti-virus program. .
I've used various McAfee products, including their latest, and been equally appalled at their efforts, their programs are near-impossible to configure on a network, with dreadful interfaces and also over-bloated. 4850

I have downloaded avast home addition and found it excellent. Great interface, even the simple interface is easy to use. I find that I mostly go on java, java script, and any of those kind of sites so I decided to download and buy avast pro. The extra features are worth the price to me, especially script scanning which comes in useful on java based sites. I found 15 or more script viruses using this program. So if you can afford to buy pro, go for it otherwise home is fine to use for you. Like the guy said somewhere on the page use AVG with avast as avast cannot get certain virus's. in general the one that avast doesn't get AVG does. 4783

It is better to use a combination of AVG and Avast as i found they missed out some viruses. For instance, Avast missed 'redlof' on html files while AVG missed a worm (can't remember its name). So you will be very safe if u use both instead of one as the chance's very remote for both to miss out the same virus.
I am more prone to use AVG as it can scan much faster than Avast. Avast really taking too much time...in loading and scanning though,it looks 'nicer' than AVG's a bit primitive look. It's sound effects are nicer too but ... i am not girls who look for all this :P, I am more towards the speed and functionality.
Both of them are free for home user so here i would like to recommend everyone to use them. At least they have better hearts than some 'paid-antivirus softwares' who cheated me that my virus database is up-to-date (when it is few months outdated) when i stopped paying them the fees. 4748

This is the BEST Antivirus that I have ever had before! Without a Firewall, we were getting viruses all of the time. Until Sasser b. Virus struck, causing us to have to reboot our entire systems on our home network, costing us both time and money; we had 4 viruses that NOTHING including all of the expensive crap could remove so then we tried Avast and it got the viruses off within 10 minutes of scanning our hard drive. Afterwards we installed the ZoneAlarm free Firewall and haven't had any viruses since! Avast AND free ZoneAlarm work great together!
I feel safe now knowing that we are protected from viruses and computer intrusions. 4725

I've installed Avast 4 Home Edition on five PCs, including my own. The upside: solid detection of in-the-wild viruses, superb updater, decent speed, useful boot-time scan feature, reliable on WinXP, decent support, light on resources. The downside: poor detection of non-virus malware, almost useless at detecting dialers, the email scanner can malfunction on Win98 in my experience, no command-line scanner, no scheduler, the UI is clumsy and eccentric.
